We’ve added another awesome outdoor clothing brand to our online shop: Sunny Cubs! After a scare with melanoma in her family, the founder of Sunny Cubs, Jessica, made sun protection her mission. After discovering a gap in available apparel (especially for our littlest explorers), she set out to bridge that gap with comfortable and safe sun-protective clothing for babies and youth. We sat down with Jessica to learn more about her mission and what the future has in store for Sunny Cubs.
How Did Sunny Cubs Get Started, and What is Your Mission?
My husband was diagnosed with melanoma when our daughter was just 10 days old, and from that moment on, sun protection became a priority for our family.
That summer, while preparing for a two-week solo backpacking trip with my daughter (she was nine months old), I quickly realized there was a major gap in the market. Full-coverage UPF 50+ swimwear existed, but soft, breathable, everyday sun-protective clothing for babies - like what’s readily available in men’s and women’s wear - simply didn’t.
The idea for Sunny Cubs came to life while hiking in Joshua Tree National Park. Being outdoors has always been where I feel most at home, and I was frustrated that families like ours had so few options to comfortably and safely get outside with their little ones.
Sunny Cubs was created to change that. Our mission is to make thoughtfully designed, UPF 50 sun-protective clothing that’s comfortable, breathable, and made for real outdoor life - helping families feel confident getting outside with their kids from day one.
Why Do You Feel It’s Important for Families to Get Outdoors?
We believe getting outdoors is essential for both physical and emotional well-being — for kids and parents. Especially in the first year postpartum, time outside can be incredibly grounding and supportive for recovery during a big season of change.
Building an outdoor lifestyle with kids also helps establish lifelong habits around movement, curiosity, and connection.
How Do Your Products Help Families Enjoy Nature?
At Sunny Cubs, we see sun protection as an enabler — when families feel confident their kids are protected and comfortable, it’s easier to say yes to getting outside more often.
Is There Anything Else You Would Like to Share?
We have some exciting launches and updates on the horizon. We’re layering in a second fabric option, bamboo, in addition to our incredibly soft TENCEL™ Lyocell fabric.
Our highly anticipated Baby Sun Suit will be launching later this year, and our Youth Sun Hoodie will be available in the coming weeks. By this summer, Sunny Cubs will be able to support sun protection for kids from day one through age 14.
