You’ve likely heard about the reality TV show Shark Tank, where entrepreneurs present their business or product to a panel of investors (the “Sharks). The “Sharks” then ask grueling questions to understand the full business plan, model, weaknesses, etc, and decide whether or not they want to invest. Our very own fearless leader, Tavis, was recently featured on Season 16, Episode 19!
We watched as Tavis presented the products and mission of Morrison Outdoors. Read on as he shares his experience on the show, along with what the future may have in store for Morrison Outdoors.
Going on Shark Tank was a huge opportunity for Morrison Outdoors. We've worked hard to build this business, focusing on getting families outside with their babies, but we’re still growing. We thought the show could help us reach more people faster. Plus, we have a really cool product. We knew it would stand out, and maybe the Sharks would love it as much as we do.
A lot of practice. I must have rehearsed the pitch hundreds of times—on walks, in the shower, driving, you name it. I also watched an unhealthy number of Shark Tank episodes to study how different pitches played out. We built and rebuilt the set, refined our messaging, and drilled answers to every possible question the Sharks might ask. It was intense, but I wanted to be as prepared as possible when the cameras rolled.
It’s surreal. The doors open, and suddenly you're standing in front of five Sharks you’ve seen on TV for years. The adrenaline kicks in fast. You have to remember your lines, handle rapid-fire questions, and somehow stay calm and confident while also making sure your product shines. It’s a whirlwind—but also one of the most exhilarating moments of my life.
One big takeaway was just how sharp the Sharks are. They pick up on the tiniest details and ask really tough questions. You have to know your business inside and out. I was also surprised at how supportive the sharks were —even when they asked tough questions, or decided not to invest, it felt like everyone wanted to see us succeed. And of course, I was not prepared for Robert falling in the tent!
Haha—she tried! I had to make sure to get it back after filming. Although she did keep the sleeping bag it was wearing.
While we got a handshake deal on the show, ultimately the investment with Mark and Barbara did not close. That’s okay, though – we are incredibly grateful just to have gotten to pitch to them, and to be able to air on the show. Wishing them nothing but the best!
We’re focused on expanding our product line and getting into more retail doors. We've proven that there's a real demand for safe, high-quality outdoor gear for babies and toddlers, and we want to be the go-to brand for families who adventure together. We're also looking into international expansion and building out our fulfillment capabilities to keep up with growth. The Shark Tank boost gave us momentum—now it's time to run with it.
