One of the brands now featured in our shop, Kula Cloth, has set out to tackle how we can be more sustainable (and more hygienic) when nature calls. We had a lovely chat with Mare Ruland, CEO and Gratitude Consultant for Kula Cloth, to learn about the origins and inspiration behind their revolutionary Kula Cloth.
What is Your Mission at Kula Cloth?
Our mission at Kula Cloth is to empower people to recreate responsibly and confidently in the outdoors by providing sustainable, innovative hygiene gear while also sparking joy, creativity, and connection. We believe that something as simple as going to the bathroom outside should be safe, sanitary, and stigma-free.
How Did Your Brand Start?
Kula started as a solution to a personal problem. I was on a backpacking trip in Washington and realized there had to be a better alternative to using a bandana or packing TP in and out. I couldn’t find a high-quality, purpose-built pee cloth on the market, so I decided to design one! After a year of research, testing, and prototypes, the first Kula Cloth was born in 2018. Since then, we’ve grown into a small but mighty team that’s passionate about creating gear that makes people feel confident and cared for in the wild.
Why Do You Feel It’s Important for Families to Get Outdoors?
Nature has a unique ability to bring people together, slow us down, and offer space for joy, learning, and healing. When families spend time outdoors, they’re building memories, confidence, and resilience — not just in their kids, but in themselves. We want people of all ages and identities to feel that the outdoors is a place where they belong.
How Do Your Products Help Families Enjoy Nature?
Our products are made to simplify backcountry hygiene, reduce waste, and support confidence for all genders and ages, especially those new to outdoor adventures. Kula Cloth helps parents and kids feel more prepared, whether they’re out for a day hike or a thru-hike. Our reusable cloth replaces toilet paper for pee, which means less trash to pack out and fewer “oops” moments when nature calls.
Is There Anything Else You Would Like to Share?
Kula is more than a product — it’s a community. From dance parties to poetry, from trail magic to giving back, we try to infuse everything we do with a sense of joy, curiosity, and care. We’re also proudly women-owned and committed to sustainability at every level of our business.
